2/7/2018 Playgrounds Kids Will LoveThere are some great options for fun playgrounds. Many of them make a convenient stop before or after a hike or dip at a swimming hole. Here is the listing by town.
Jay - Walking/biking distance from the farm. Basic playground, best in the morning since there isn't much shade and the slides get very hot. Easy walk to see the covered bridge and get down to the river for stone throwing and wading. Just upstream is the rapids which is a very popular swimming spot. Wilmington Beach - Picnic table and pavilion, sandy beach with lifeguard, big playground, public bathrooms. Live music here during the summer and also a great spot to rent a canoe. We often spot beavers swimming around here. Keene - There is a small playground at the Keene Community Center, which is also home to Little Peaks Preschool during the school year. Grab some baked goodies across the street at Cedar Run while you're here. Keene Valley - There's a large playground at Keene Central School. A convenient stop on the way to or from many hikes and swims. Lake Placid - There is a playground right on Mirror Lake beside the beach there. Swim and play, then walk across the street to the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery (there's even a new glassed in playroom on the third floor)! 2/7/2018 Rainy DaysAlthough a trudge through the forest on a drizzly day can be fun, thunderstorms can make getting outside dangerous. Here are some ideas to get you through a rainy day or two in the Adirondacks.

The fresh mountain water is certainly crisp and refreshing! Here are a few of our favorites!

It's on the way to Rocky Peak Ridge, a 46'er often hiked in tandem with Giant. 2/7/2018 Hiking with KidsAs parents of 4 and 6 year old boys, we have a good sense of little kids and hikes that are sure to please the whole group. The promise of an ice cream cone and a dip in the river always seems to give our kids a second wind.
Little Kids: Baxter: Such a classic hike! Beautiful views and loads of wild blueberries (in August) to munch up top. Wilmington Cobbles: Easy, flat walking with lots of little bridges that the kids love to cross. Nice views from a ledge down into Wilmington. Ice cream at the White Brook Dairy Bar is the perfect post-hiking treat. Copperas Pond: Two trails lead to the pond, so you can choose the short and steep trail or longer and mellow. The pond is large and pristine - great for swimming! A lean-to on the shore makes a great picnic spot. Bigger Kids: Roostercomb: Another beautiful hike through some old growth forest and a unique perspective into the high peaks. A nice rocky top for lunch, soaking in some rays, and enjoying the mountains. Insider scoop: After your hike, swing into the Noonmark Diner for an amazing homemade ice cream sandwich! (Can you tell we like ice cream?) Cascade: This is the first 46'er for many kids and the view from the top is breathtaking! The hike up is challenging but do-able. It is also very popular and can be crowded on the weekends. We suggest hiking here mid-week. While an athletic adult can climb to the top in an hour, plan on a full day with kids leaving about 3 hours to climb up with plenty of opportunities to check out nature, rest, snack, and drink water. Its quite an accomplishment! The Mountaineer in Keene Valley sells patches for all the 46'ers - a great way to commemorate the hike! |
